“Box Office Battle” is The Fly’s weekly roundup of what movies topped the weekend’s box office.
Zendaya’s romance-tennis drama “‘Challengers” won the weekend at the box office with a $15M debut after MGM Amazon Studios (AMZN) decided to open nationwide instead of giving it a platform release. Overseas, the movie earned $9M from 52 markets for a global total of $25M. Warner Bros. International is handling the release offshore for MGM. “Challengers” sports a B+ CinemaScore.
BOX OFFICE RUNNER-UPS: Lionsgate (LGF.B) and Kingdom Story Company’s “Unsung Hero” placed number two with a $7.8M debut, while sporting an A+ CinemaScore. Behind it was Warner Bros. (WBD) and Legendary’s “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” with another $7.2M for a global cume of $519.3M. A24’s “Civil War” placed number four with another $7M from 3,518 locations. Rounding out the top five, Comcast (CMCSA) subsidiary Universal’s “Abigail” grossed an estimated $5.3M in its second weekend.
